Personal Project

Duration:

April 2025 - May 2025

This project aims to develop a product that makes food disposal more approachable and accessible in RISD cafeteria; moreover, school cafeteria for younger ages.

"Perfect! RISD dining hall just started having a food waste only bin. What's wrong?"

Photo

"But why does RISD cafeteria use this inefficient layout for different waste bins?"

Design Points

  1. Change of disposal area layout

  1. Clear indication and separation of waste bins without isolating location

  1. Easy food waste disposal with one hand

Ideation

Layout Variations
Accounting for concerns about contamination and the movement of dining staff and students, three different layouts were explored.
Comfort Rim Bin
An early concept explored a waste bin with silicone rim that allows users to empty plates and bowls with one hand.
Attachable Product
A silicone comfort rim was designed as an attachment for existing bins, with a scraper feature also explored.
Visual Distinction
Adding a clear and playful visual distinction to prevent contamination while encouraging a more engaging habit of food waste disposal.

Implication

Although the project was developed and tested within a college cafeteria context, the formation of sustainable habits begins at an early age.

I believe Mr. FrogEat has a strong potential to extend beyond the college environment, serving as an engaging and educational tool for encouraging responsible food disposal in elementary schools and beyond.

After the project presentation, RISD’s cafeteria The MET changed the layout of the compost area.
